British Egg Information Service (c.1960s)

Year: Undated (c.1960s)

Format: Leaflet

Illustrator: Uncredited, original character by Ruth Gill (born c. 1910-1920)

Client: British Egg Information Service

Details: These leaflets were issued by The British Egg Information Service. They are undated but appear to be early 1960s, around the time that posters featuring the same character were art directed by Ruth Gill.

Gill art directed or designed much of the Egg Marketing Board’s output from this time, so she may also have been connected to this project.

Ruth Gill (born c. 1910-1920) studied sculpture and design at the Chelsea School of Arts. She was a director of Colman Prentis and Varley when she worked on the noted Fortnum & Mason logo in the mid-1950s, as well as other projects in conjunction with Edward Bawden.

She also produced work for major brands including Pepsi, Elizabeth Arden and Jaeger.

Gill was an art director at Ogilvy and Mather when she produced work for the Egg Marketing Board. The famous “Go to Work on an Egg” poster is held in the V&A collection.
