Australia - Qantas (1957)

Year: 1957

Format: Leaflet

Illustrator: Harry Rogers (1929-2012)

Client: Qantas

Details: This 1957 Qantas/BOAC leaflet features cover artwork by Australian designer Harry Rogers (1929-2012). There are also a number of illustrations inside the leaflet. Rogers worked extensively with Qantas, so it is likely that these illustrations are also his work.

Harry Rogers studied at East Sydney Technical College, before moving to California where he studied Animation at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).

Rogers worked for a television documentary producer for a while before returning to Australia in 1956, where he continued working as a freelance poster artist, graphic designer, art director and typographer.

Qantas was Rogers’ main client from the early 1950s through to 1985. He designed the Qantas logo-font in the mid-1960s and created many different poster series, each with a different look using a variety of techniques. He also art directed the Qantas in-flight magazine and staff magazine (1976-1984), designed safety brochures and oversaw an entire rebranding from 1970 to 1984. This work included the Cyclone typeface, aircraft livery, and cocktail-bars in Qantas’ early Boeing 747s.

As a freelancer, Rogers worked for many other clients including Avon, Coca Cola, Colgate-Palmolive and Kimberly-Clarke.
