Details: These c.1955 Holsten beer mats feature characters created by Joan Jordan, an artist born in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Jordan trained as a painter and ceramic artist in Denmark, France and England. She started making fabric appliqué pictures to entertain the children of her British hosts. She settled in London when she married. Her husband Paul Jordan, a former naval officer, saw commercial potential in her “cloth-cut” work and acted as her agent.
She was a very successful artist during the 1950s and early 60s, working internationally to create illustrations for advertising, products and magazine covers.
